Welcome to
Marshwood Church of England Primary Academy
We are a small school in rural West Dorset. We nurture all members of our school family to be happy, self-confident and supportive of one another. We want each person to flourish in their lives within school, the local community and beyond.
Well done to our Marshwood Stars. Well do for working hard in your learning and following our school values.

In Science we looked at how John McAdam designed roads, he said a mixture of large rocks, small rocks and gravel was the best way to make the road strong.
We put this to the test and made 3 different roads by combining chocolate, biscuit, raisins and marshmallows. After the roads had set, we placed cars on each road testing their strength and working out which road was the strongest. Coneys had a fantastic time learning and creating in science.

A huge round of applause for the fantastic World Book Day costumes last week. It was wonderful to see the children share their favourite stories with their classes throughout the day.
Thank you to @archwaybookshop for helping secure each child their book of choice for World Book Day, allowing the children to take home a special book to enjoy. Thank you to our parents also for all of the hard work that went into the costumes for this day.

Woodland School is a highlight here at Marshwood. We are very lucky to have a bespoke site just a short walk from our school where the children enjoy an afternoon filled with a variety of different activities, exploring the outdoors and learning many skills outside of the classroom. Last week we looked for signs of Spring in and around the woodland, explored the boundaries of the site and enjoyed playing on the rope swing and also in the mud! The children created a pathway using fallen branches across some of the mud.

Ahead of World Book Day, we were delighted to welcome Nicola Wyrill into our school last week. Nicola is a local author who shared her book 'The Boy Who Hid in the Woods' during our collective worship with the whole school. She spent the morning with Pilsdon class exploring how to create a story, sharing ideas with the children and working on the structure of putting a story together. A huge thank you to Nicola for taking the time to come into our school, she said 'It was a pleasure to meet the children. They were charming and enthusiastic. I wish them all the best in their future story-writing exercises.'
Thank you also to Martha and Ross who helped arrange this fantastic experience for the children, they met Nicola whilst walking their dog Merlin, who matches the dog in this story.

On Friday we have our first Woodland School session of the Spring term.
On Woodland School days children need to arrive at school 'Woodland School Ready' wearing sensible, warm clothing, with trousers and tops with long sleeves, all year round. Additional layers that can be removed (if need be) are best as this allows for all changes in the weather. The weather can be particularly unpredictable at this time of year, so please dress and equip the children accordingly. Children will need to bring/wear waterproof trousers, a warm waterproof coat and wellington boots in a named bag. Please remind the children to leave wellington boots and waterproof trousers in a plastic bag under the canopy ready to change into on our way.
It is also advisable they bring a hat and gloves and preferably wear warm socks or two pairs perhaps to keep their feet warm. We do have a few spare pairs of waterproofs and wellies in case children forget or don't own them. It is advisable for the children to bring in spare trousers and socks in case they should get very muddy or wet.

In Science, we looked at the story of The Three Little Pigs. We looked at different materials and made comparisons of their strength and what they could be used for. In pairs, we worked like engineers in order to build houses with a variety of materials. We then tested them against the big bad wolf's huff and puff to see what would protect the three little pigs. We look at different materials and made comparisons of their strength and what they could be used for.

In school this week, we are marking Children's Mental Health Week, the theme this year is 'this is my place'. That means feeling like you’re part of something, such as
your family, your school, your group of friends or a team. These happy moments help us feel connected, valued, and accepted. When we feel like we belong, we feel happy, safe, and ready to learn and play. It helps us grow strong in our minds and
bodies, and it makes it easier to make friends, do well in school, and feel good about ourselves.
During Children’s Mental Health Week, we’ll be talking about how we can help everyone feel like they belong. We will can learn from each other what makes us feel happy. We’ll learn how to be kind, include others, and make sure no one feels left out.
Because everyone deserves to feel like they have a place where they are accepted, cared for, and loved.

Last week we were visited by @littlegreenchange1. Little Green Change’s Climate Resilient Schools project helps schools to adapt and plan for the future using their expertise and knowledge. They work directly with children to enable them to lead by example and to make Little Green Changes that make a BIG difference, showcasing and amplifying these achievements to create a sense of pride and purpose. Children from Pilsdon have now formed an Environment Council who will work alongside Little Green Change to implement changes within our school grounds. We are now in the process of sourcing water butts, pear trees, a hedgehog house, a bird nesting box as well as many other things to help support the local environment. A huge thank you to Clare from @littlegreenchange1 for supporting this project.
